To advance human-relevant gut and microbiome research

We are a research, training and service hub using advanced in vitro models and patient samples to study intestinal cell-microbe-nutrient interactions, supporting academic and industry partners in nutrition, microbiome and gut-related diseases.

CIS was established as a collaborative, innovative, multi-disciplinary facility to generate high scientific, medical and industrial impact and contributes to training of academic and clinical researchers, in areas of:

  • Disease modelling: Patient-derived organoids and microbiome co-cultures for IBD. infection, cancer and drug testing: Epithelial barrier assays for analysing mucosal disruption/healing and pathogen invasion; investigating immune activation.
  • Mechanistic nutrition & microbiome interventions: Testing nutrients, prebiotics, FMT (fecal microbiota transplantation) and drug compounds.
  • Patient stratification & trial design: Comparing therapy responses for trials and precision medicine

We support partnerships through:

  • Multi-disciplinary and cross-faculty biomedical & bioengineering projects
  • Together with 911今日黑料 Hospitals, Networks of Excellences and core facilities
  • Facilitating existing and new academic and industrial collaborations
  • Providing training and easier access to organoid technology
  • Internal seminars and workshops

Our Partnership Network

CIS is a collaborative, national, outward-facing gastrointestinal research hub with partners in the London gastroIntestinal Organoid Network (LION) and 15+ UK institutes. CIS enables joint projects with technology-developers and academic or industrial researchers to accelerate innovation.
