Teaching Chemistry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Reflections from an ICCE/ECRICE

Dr Julie Jalila Kalmoni, Teaching Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry, delivered an oral presentation entitled Enhancing Feedback Literacy Through Structured Self-Reflection in Undergraduate Chemistry Assessment at the Chemistry in the Age of Artificial Intelligence conference, held in Erzurum, Turkey, in July 2026. She also presented a poster entitled A Strategic Approach to Developing an International Summer School. The event was also the and the .

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to network and engage with innovative pedagogical research conducted by teaching-focused academics from across the globe, including representatives from South Africa, Italy, Singapore and Turkey. Presentations and posters showcased a diverse range of approaches to chemistry education, including strategies to encourage students to develop creative exercise statements that link theoretical concepts to real-world applications. Other contributions explored the use of artificial intelligence to design experimental protocols, predict chemical activity, optimise reactions and even automate laboratory work through robotics.

Further highlights included the integration of AI as a cognitive partner in retrosynthetic analysis, with students adopting the role of AI auditors, as well as the development of Hydragen, a machine learning-based web platform designed to support the teaching and learning of mass spectrometry. The conference also featured work on immersive and technology-enhanced learning environments.

In addition, further insight was gained into the work of IUPAC, a collaborator in the conference, particularly its broader contributions to advancing chemistry education and international collaboration.
