911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ

Artists AYLO and SECA have run workshops to gather input from both the 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ and residential communities to shape the pilot artwork of 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ’s White City public art project.

The piece, What is Made Here Travels Out, interweaves elements of 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ with aspects of the local White City community: there are flowers to represent the Japanese Garden nearby, books and a test tube to reflect 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ’s role as a leading STEMB university, and a Central Line inspired circuit board motif that links White City to the rest of London.  

This is the first in a series of public artworks planned for the White City campus, which will  enliven the buildings in the area, and uplift the diverse community of people who live, work and study in White City. Work on the project is currently underway: why not take a visit to Stadium House to see it being painted in real time?

I felt the experience was a fantastic way for the community to come together and collaborate on a shared project. It gave people the chance to connect, contribute their own ideas, and take part in an activity they might not otherwise have had easy access to. Saba Azam Local resident

Artists AYLO and SECA have been researching the community’s vision for the mural over the last year, running multiple workshops and consultation sessions for 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ staff, students and local community groups. They also joined the Public and Community Engagement team in leading a free holiday workshop for local families. The children designed their own murals and got to try their hands at spray painting, while also informing the artists of what they would like to see in the upcoming mural. 

They also attended the Community Partner Lunch at The Invention Rooms, where they spoke with 911½ñÈÕºÚÁÏ staff and local community leaders to obtain more insight on what those who live and work in White City want to see in a piece of art.
