Jannat is a first-year Library Apprentice in our Library Services team. She is undertaking a level 3 .

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I personally thrive in practical learning environments rather than traditional classroom-based learning. The ability to work full-time whilst earning a recognised qualification — at no personal cost — made the apprenticeship pathway particularly appealing to me. Gaining hands-on experience whilst also developing professionally felt like the best route for myself. I also had prior experience in a similar role, which I had thoroughly enjoyed. When the opportunity arose to work within the same sector, I was eager to apply and further develop my skills through an apprenticeship.

What does a typical day look like?

A typical day begins with administrative responsibilities and responding to user enquiries. As I work within the user services team, supporting library users is a key part of my role, and that can include assisting with resources, answering queries, or providing general guidance.

Throughout the day, I work closely with my colleagues to ensure the smooth running of the library services. My responsibilities are varied, and I work alongside colleagues across different teams. This enables me to develop a broad understanding of library operations whilst continually strengthening my professional skills.

What new skills have you gained?

I have developed a range of professional and practical skills. I have been able to strengthen my communication skills through regular interactions with library users and colleagues, ensuring that enquiries are handled efficiently and professionally. I have also developed my organisational and time-management skills by balancing day-to-day responsibilities whilst studying towards my qualification. In addition to this, I have developed greater confidence in problem-solving and working independently.

What has been the most rewarding part of the apprenticeship so far?

The most rewarding part of my apprenticeship has been seeing how much I’ve grown in both confidence and ability. Being able to apply what I learn through my studies directly to my role in the library makes the experience feel meaningful and practical.

I’ve also really valued the insight I’ve gained from meeting and networking with other professionals in the sector. Having the opportunity to visit different institutions and explore areas such as the archives has broadened my understanding of the field. These experiences have truly been a highlight of my apprenticeship so far.

What advice would you give to somebody considering this route?

I would strongly encourage anyone considering a career change or looking to develop professionally to explore the apprenticeship pathway. It offers the opportunity to gain valuable, practical experience whilst working towards a qualification. The experience itself is invaluable, and you are able to enter the workforce with little prior experience and truly learn on the job, building skills and confidence as you progress.

My advice would be to stay proactive, ask questions, and make the most of every learning opportunity available. An apprenticeship is not just about gaining a qualification; it also provides a strong foundation for long-term professional growth. I would also recommend applying for roles that genuinely interest you, as apprenticeships can be challenging at times — but incredibly rewarding.
