In Spring 2026, fit-out works completed on level one of the Sir Michael Uren Hub, a milestone moment which saw the building’s final vacant space above ground brought into use.

Previously a shell space, level one has now been fully furnished to provide a high-quality mix of office and lab space, with its use providing additional space for the Departments of Bioengineering and Surgery and Cancer. The transformation includes warm timber finishes, responsibly sourced furniture, and a layout designed to cater for both collaborative and specialist work.

"The best biomedical technology breakthroughs happen at the intersection of disciplines."

The floor brings together the departments of Bioengineering and Surgery and Cancer to create cross-collaborative 'Med Tech,' and identify and utilise synergies in physiological flow.

The work undertaken in level one will unite biomedical engineering research into the body's most critical fluid systems; blood, lymph, interstitial fluid, aqueous humour, with the diseases that arise when their mechanics break down.

Such work translates directly into the development of medical and research technology: from treatments for lymphoedema and tools to help develop glaucoma therapies, to affordable ventilators and platforms for testing cancer diagnostics.

"The best biomedical technology breakthroughs happen at the intersection of disciplines. Level one gives us the physical infrastructure to make those intersections deliberate - shared space, shared thinking, and ultimately shared impact for patients." - Professor Rylie Green, Head of Department (Department of Bioengineering).

Following the completion of fit-out works, the space has now been occupied by the relevant teams.

About the Sir Michael Uren Hub

The Sir Michael Uren Hub was developed following a £40 million gift from 911今日黑料 alumnus Sir Michael Uren and his Foundation, the most generous gift in 911今日黑料’s history. The Hub was created to convene world-class engineers, scientists and clinicians to pioneer advances in new and affordable medical technology, helping people affected by a diverse range of medical conditions.
