A finite element-spherical harmonics model for radiative transfer in inhomogeneous clouds. Part II. Some applications
, Joint Assembly of the EGS/AGU/EUG, Pages: 223-237EVENT has been used to examine the effects of 3D cloud structure, distribution, and inhomogeneity on the scattering of visible solar radiation and the resulting 3D radiation field. Large eddy simulation and aircraft measurements are used to create realistic cloud fields which are continuous or broken with smooth or uneven tops. The values, patterns and variance in the resulting downwelling and upwelling radiation from incident visible solar radiation at different angles are then examined and compared to measurements. The results from EVENT confirm that 3D cloud structure is important in determining the visible radiation field, and that these results are strongly influenced by the solar zenith angle. The results match those from other models using visible solar radiation, and are supported by aircraft measurements of visible radiation, providing confidence in the new model. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Observation of O+ (4P-4D0) lines in electron aurora over Svalbard
, Annales Geophysicae, Vol: 22, Pages: 2805-2817, ISSN: 0992-7689This work reports on observations of 0<sup>+</sup> lines in aurora over Svalbard, Norway. The Spectrographic Imaging Facility measures auroral spectra in three wavelength intervals (H<inf>β</inf>, N<sup>+</sup><inf>2</inf> 1N(0,2) and N<sup>+</sup><inf>2</inf> 1N(1,3) . The oxygen ion <sup>4</sup>P-<sup>4</sup>D<sup>0</sup> multiplet (4639-4696 Å) is blended with the N<sup>+</sup><inf>2</inf> 1N(1,3 band. It is found that in electron aurora, the brightness of this multiplet, is on average, about 0. 1 of the N<sup>+</sup><inf>2</inf> 1N(0,2) total brightness. A joint optical and incoherent scatter radar study of an electron aurora event shows that the ratio is enhanced when the ionisation in the upper E-layer (140-190 km) is significant with respect to the E-layer peak below 130 km. Rayed arcs were observed on one such occasion, whereas on other occasions the auroral intensity was below the threshold of the imager. A one-dimensional electron transport model is used to estimate the cross section for production of the multiplet in electron collisions, yielding 0. 18 × 10<sup>-18</sup> cm<sup>2</sup>. © European Geosciences Union 2004.

It is suggested that the seasonal dependence of interannual variability displayed by observed sea surface temperature (SST) over the north tropical Atlantic primarily reflects the seasonality of the remote forcing associated with the North Atlantic and Southern Oscillations and is controlled by the mean damping time scale of SST anomaly. A stochastic model including a seasonally dependent forcing is used to test this hypothesis against observations. © 2004 American Meteorological Society.
