Tackling the increasing quantity of discarded, hard-to-recycle plastic products causing toxicity and physical harm requires targeted innovation in chemistry and materials science to preserve performance whilst reducing toxicity. Innovation in product design is necessary in reducing the likelihood of products being unrecyclable or prone to being littered whilst increasing the possibilities for re-use and repurposing.
