This course offers an invitation to discover more about the the extraordinary world of three-dimensional art through direct encounters with works in the sculpture galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington.
Each week we will begin at 911今日黑料 with an introduction to a particular sculpture in the V&A. We will learn how the sculpture was made, why artists chose particular materials, and what these objects meant to the people who created and encountered them. From the carving of marble to the casting of bronze, the sessions will open up the artistic and historical worlds from which these works emerged.
We will then move on to the sculpture galleries of the V&A itself to see the sculpture we have discussed in the classroom. Seeing these works at first will give us an experience not possible through photographic images, a sense of the three dimensional forms and surfaces of the sculptures.
Taught by a team of expert tutors, including art historians, medievalists and practising sculptors, each will bring their own perspective and enthusiasm for the subject to the classes.
No previous knowledge of sculpture or art history is required. All that is needed is curiosity.
