We are pleased to invite you to join art and heritage conservator for a short course exploring the fascinating world of art and heritage conservation.
Over eight engaging sessions, we'll be introduced to the principles that underpin the conservation of artefacts ranging from jewellery and furniture to sculpture and even entire buildings. You’ll be encouraged to consider not only the practical challenges faced by conservators working with treasured objects, but also the ethical questions—should objects be conserved, and if so, how?
Although this is not a practical conservation course, each week we will focus on a different material—such as silverware, precious metal artefacts, decorative objects, furniture, textiles, and even plastics. We will examine how conservators, past and present, have approached these materials and what approaches might be taken in the future as conservation technology develops and attitudes towards conservation continue to evolve.
We’ll also reflect on the sustainability of heritage crafts, the value of international collaboration, and how conservation connects with today’s cultural conversations — from what we choose to preserve to how we make space for a wider range of cultural histories.
Bringing together art and science, this course is suitable both for those taking it for pleasure and for anyone seeking an introduction to key art conservation issues—whether you’re considering employing a conservator or thinking about further study in heritage conservation.
All are welcome—no previous experience is necessary.
