This course, led by renowned curator and writer offers an insider’s introduction to the systems, people and institutions that shape the production, display, discussion, value and sale of art. Each week, you will explore a different aspect of the art world, looking at how artworks move from studio to public exhibition, private collection or commercial sale.

You will consider the roles played by artists, curators, critics, dealers, collectors, auction houses, museums, foundations and art fairs, as well as the wider forces that influence artistic reputation and financial value. The course will also explore themes such as state support for the arts, the commercial gallery system, art law, art finance, publicity, collecting and new models within the contemporary art market.

Alongside classroom sessions, the course will include visits to commercial and public galleries, art schools and auction houses, giving you the opportunity to encounter different parts of the art world directly. You will also benefit from insights offered by visiting speakers drawn from the art ecosystem, which may include curators, art lawyers, dealers, press officers, artists and art finance specialists.

This course is ideal for anyone curious about how the art world operates. It may also appeal to artists, curators, collectors, gallery visitors, or those interested in developing a better understanding of the art business.

The course is taught across ten sessions, with three sessions before Easter and seven sessions after the Easter break.
