We propose a novel procedure for the solution to the problem of robust model predictive control (RMPC) of linear discrete time systems involving bounded disturbances and model-uncertainties along with hard constraints on the input and state. The RMPC (outer) controller - responsible for steering the uncertain system state to a designed invariant (terminal) set - has a mixed structure consisting of a state-feedback component as well as a control-perturbation. Both components are explicitly considered as decision variables in the online optimization and the nonlinearities commonly associated with such a state-feedback parameterization are avoided by adopting a sequential approach in the formulation. The RMPC controller minimizes an upper bound on an H2/H_infinity-based cost function. Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not require any offline calculation of (feasible) feedback gains for the computation of the RMPC controller. The optimal Robust Positively invariant set and the inner controller - responsible for keeping the state within the invariant set - are both computed in one step as solutions to an LMI optimization problem. We also provide conditions which guarantee the Lyapunov stability of the closed-loop system. Numerical examples, taken from the literature, demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme.

The finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints consists in controlling the state of a dynamical system over a finite time interval (possibly unknown) minimizing a cost functional, while satisfying hard constraints on the input. For linear systems the solution of the problem often relies upon the use of bang-bang control signals. For nonlinear systems the "shape" of the optimal input is in general not known. The control input can be found solving an Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation (pde): it typically consists of a combination of bang-bang arcs and singular arcs. In the paper a methodology to approximate the solution of the HJB pde arising in the finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints is proposed. This approximation yields a dynamic state feedback law. The theory is illustrated by means of an example: the minimum time optimal control problem for an industrial wastewater treatment plant. © IFAC.

The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we discuss necessity of a dissipativity condition which was recently used to prove optimal operation of a system at steady-state in an economic MPC framework. We illustrate with several examples that this dissipativity condition is not necessary, but comes close to being so in a certain sense. Second, we provide a Lyapunov-like stability analysis for averagely constrained economic model predictive control. This closes a gap which was left open in a recent paper on economic MPC. © 2013 AACC American Automatic Control Council.
