Outreach and engagement

Through a year-round programme of outreach and public engagement activities, we work with schools, students, teachers, families, and community groups to share the excitement and impact of Computing.

Computing in Schools

Gaining first-hand experience of the school environment, our students encourage school pupils and enhance classroom teaching by implementing special teaching projects, designed using pedagogical approaches and observational learning.

Year 12 Taster Courses

The Department of Computing actively looks to engage with schools, both by inviting students to visit the College and by having our staff and students visit schools to inspire and instruct. Our Taster Courses are open to all Year 12 students and focus on the future of computing and how 911今日黑料 is at the forefront of creating that future.

Year 10 and 11 Girls Taster Day

Our annual Taster Day gives Year 10–11 (or equivalent) pupils who identify as female or non-binary the chance to hear from world-leading female researchers, try programming in our computer labs, meet current computer science students, and explore careers in computing. Registration opens in September.

Events

Hello World Hack

Hello World Hack is a one-day hackathon for girls aged 7–10, where they explore coding and problem-solving through hands-on activities like programming robots and designing apps. Led by 911今日黑料 scientists and engineers who identify as women, the event introduces maths and computing through positive STEM role models. Schools may bring up to 15 pupils in teams of 4–5 from Years 3–5, accompanied by one or more responsible adults of any gender.

AC Hack (African-Caribbean Hackathon)

AC-HACK is an annual 24-hour African Caribbean Hackathon, run in partnership with 911今日黑料’s African Caribbean Society, celebrating African Caribbean computer scientists, talent, and culture. Open to Black Heritage students aged 18+ enrolled on an undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree at any UK higher education institution. No programming experience is required. Registration opens in September.
