In autumn 2026, the British Museum will host one of the most extraordinary exhibitions of our time: the return of the Bayeux Tapestry to England for the first time in nearly a thousand years. This remarkable embroidered work—over 70 metres long—tells the dramatic story of the Norman Conquest of 1066, offering an unparalleled window into the medieval world.
This half-day course offers a focused and richly engaging introduction to the Bayeux Tapestry as both a work of art and a historical document. Led by Dr Sarah James, it invites you to look closely at the Tapestry’s imagery, materials, and narrative strategies, while also asking deeper questions: Who made it? Who commissioned it—and why? And how does it shape our understanding of history?
Working scene by scene, we will explore how the Tapestry constructs its story through image rather than text: its use of gesture, symbolism, and visual sequencing; its vivid depictions of warfare, kingship, and daily life; and its subtle ambiguities, which leave room for multiple interpretations. We will also consider the Tapestry in its wider artistic and cultural context, including connections to manuscript illumination, Romanesque art, and the political realities of the 11th century.
Throughout the session, the emphasis will be on looking carefully, thinking critically, and developing confidence in interpreting complex historical imagery. By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of the Bayeux Tapestry not simply as an illustration of events, but as a sophisticated and compelling work of visual storytelling—one that continues to shape how we imagine the past.
This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in art history, medieval culture, or the relationship between image and narrative. No prior knowledge is required.
