Course overview

Spellbound is an immersive journey through the history and practice of magic, spell-craft, and the occult, from the ancient world to the present day. Under the guidance of acclaimed author and historian Dr. Tom Waters, we will navigate the enigmatic realms of witches, shamans, and fortune-tellers. Together, we will unearth the cultural roots of curses, ghosts, and protective talismans, while examining the persistent power of superstition in human society.

Each week, the sessions will focus on a key theme in the history of magic, assessing its place in different cultures worldwide and its evolution over centuries. We will move beyond the history books to explore the representation of the occult in art, literature and popular culture, tracing the thread from the dark folklore of the Brothers Grimm to the modern wizardry of Harry Potter.

By applying methods from history, folklore, anthropology and psychology, we will consider why magic has persisted so stubbornly in the human imagination and how it continues to resonate in our high-tech world today. The course is built on a foundation of discussion and reflection, inviting you to share personal perspectives on 'magical thinking and the objects of meaning that shape your own life.

No prior knowledge is required to join this exploration. These sessions are designed to be accessible, engaging, and taught in a safe, welcoming environment. Whether you are a lifelong scholar of the strange or simply curious about the world’s most enduring mysteries, you will find a place here.
