Who is this course for?

This course is for those with no or only very little previous experience of Punjabi.

Course overview

This introductory course is designed for adult learners with no prior knowledge of Punjabi. It offers a friendly and supportive first step into the language, with a strong emphasis on speaking, listening and everyday communication, alongside an introduction to Punjabi culture and daily life.

From the very first session, you will begin using simple spoken Punjabi in practical situations such as greetings and introductions, asking for directions, shopping, and ordering food. Clear guidance on pronunciation will help you build confidence in understanding and being understood in real-life conversations.

You will also be introduced to the Gurmukhi script, enabling you to recognise and read basic words and phrases, but the main focus of the course remains on developing practical conversational ability. Activities will include guided dialogue, pair and group speaking exercises, listening practice, and supportive feedback to help you progress at a comfortable pace.

Alongside language learning, the course offers insight into Punjabi traditions, customs, music and social contexts in which the language is spoken in South Asia and within Punjabi communities around the world, including the UK. This cultural understanding supports more confident and meaningful communication.

This course provides a strong foundation for further study and is ideal whether you are learning Punjabi for travel, family connections, work, cultural interest, or personal enrichment.

Information about recommended textbooks and learning resources will be provided in the first session.
