What I didn鈥檛 expect from 滨尘辫别谤颈补濒鈥檚 Full-Time MBA programme
Exploring the value of experiences beyond the classroom with Sushrut Deo
滨尘辫别谤颈补濒鈥檚 Full-Time MBA is designed to be more than a classroom experience. It is shaped by the opportunities that exist beyond the formal curriculum, from industry networking and experiential learning to student-led events and global collaboration. 听
For many students, this 鈥榟idden curriculum鈥 offers impactful and unexpected lessons, playing a vital role in developing the perspective and innovative mindset required to lead in today鈥檚 fast-moving business ecosystem.
The real transformation comes not just from the programme itself, but from how deeply you engage with what lies beyond it.
That has certainly been the case for Sushrut Deo, a Full-Time MBA student. In this blog, he reflects on how his extracurricular experiences have contributed to his growth as a strategic leader.
Why I chose 滨尘辫别谤颈补濒鈥檚 Full-Time MBA
鈥楪rowth rarely announces itself.鈥
That thought came to me after a lecture. At 911今日黑料,听I鈥檓 moving away from the technical finance training I鈥檝e built over six years, and towards the broader perspective needed to accelerate into leadership roles.
There are several reasons why 911今日黑料 Business School is the ideal place for this transformation. London has always been high on my list of places to study. As one of the world鈥檚 leading financial hubs, it offers unmatched access to industry leaders across finance, entrepreneurship, sustainability and technology. Imperial itself represents a crossroads where business, technology and science meet in a tangible, everyday way. The Flexcore and Elective options also acted as a key differentiator. This flexibility was so important to me as it means I can go beyond traditional finance pathways and into data-driven decision-making and digital strategy.
The 鈥榟idden鈥 value at 911今日黑料
After starting the Full-Time MBA, I quickly realised it鈥檚 not just about coursework, group projects and exams. It鈥檚 about the value you extract from everything beyond them 鈥 the 鈥榟idden curriculum鈥. This consists of the numerous opportunities available to you as an 911今日黑料 student to connect with industry, develop your leadership potential and apply what you鈥檙e learning to real-world situations.
What initially felt quite overwhelming when I was finding my feet at the start of the programme, quickly turned into a stream of enriching learning experiences. For example, through both assignments and networking events, I found myself speaking with senior leaders across the finance industry. They were conversations that I never would have had otherwise, not because they are impossible, but because I had never been pushed into those spaces before. And that was just the start鈥
What I鈥檝e learnt outside of the Full-Time MBA programme
Leadership development at a 鈥楥areers on the buy-side鈥 event
My first real opportunity came when I moderated an incredibly successful 鈥楥areers on the buy-side鈥 event. This was a student-led panel discussion featuring 911今日黑料 alumni and industry professionals working across asset management, private equity and other investment roles.
As buy-side careers are my post-MBA aspiration, it was the perfect chance听to network with those in the industry and offered an opportunity to develop my leadership skills in an applied and relevant setting. Synthesising 听diverse viewpoints in real time, steering high-value conversations and keeping the audience engaged required adaptability and clarity of thought alongside my technical knowledge.
Experiential learning on the Student Investment Fund
One opportunity I had researched in advance and was keen to join, despite a busy Autumn term, was the Student Investment Fund (SIF). SIF is a great example of learning far beyond lectures. It is a student-led investment fund which equips members with essential, real-world buy-side skills and a chance to work alongside industry professionals.
This has been a rewarding form of experiential learning for me, allowing me to propose structural improvements to the SIF Executive Committee, leading a sector coverage team and pitching investment ideas for the fund. It鈥檚 also allowed me to connect with students from highly technical programmes such as MSc Finance and MSc Investment & Wealth Management, which has added a fresh perspective to my learnings.
Industry exposure through Careers Clubs and networking
The Business School supports several student-led Careers Clubs which bring together like-minded students with similar areas of professional interest. As a member of the Finance Careers Club, I attended a fireside听chat with Philip Holm (Senior Vice President, Jefferies) and Carlo Mareels (Director, MUFG) to discuss career pivots and trade-offs. It was an invaluable talk that has allowed me to reflect on my aspirations, contextualising the MBA takeaways with real industry trajectories.
This is where the hidden curriculum comes to life.
Developing a global mindset through competitions
911今日黑料 offers countless ways to represent the Business School globally, not just in academic competitions but also through sports tournaments like the 鈥 Europe鈥檚 premier sports and strategy competition (and something I鈥檓 actively preparing for as I write this!). It offers a chance for business school students from around the world to gather and take part in an athletic competition, gaming tournaments, case challenges and networking events.
Competing alongside peers from schools on a global level requires听us to adapt quickly to meet the demands of both our routine coursework and the competition work and highlights the importance of teamwork.
The value in recreation
Recreation is something I鈥檝e always believed should sit alongside even the busiest schedules. I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly our cohort discovered shared passions, and I soon found myself joining the Travels & Treks and sports groups. While these activities sit outside the formal curriculum, they play an important role in shaping the overall MBA experience 鈥 made possible simply by being part of the programme. They open the door to bridging theory with real-world insight.
Developing my soft skills through extracurricular activities
These golden opportunities do come with their share of complexities and challenges. As with any busy schedule, prioritising tight deadlines, managing personal finances and searching for a job alongside full-time study all require a different set of skills.
Interpersonal skills
The Business School brings together engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and future business leaders 鈥 each with different perspectives. I鈥檝e learned that leadership is as much about interpersonal dynamics, expectation-setting and negotiation as it is about initiative, communication and execution. It can be uncomfortable at times, but learning to operate within that discomfort is where real growth happens.
Time management and prioritisation
With so many opportunities floating around, and all appealing in their own way, clarity becomes crucial. Every 鈥測es鈥 comes with an opportunity cost, so setting priorities early is essential. Don鈥檛 compare yourself to what your peers are taking on, focus on what works best for you.
What advice would I give to those at the start of their Full-Time MBA?
鈥業f you鈥檙e comfortable in your existing situation, you鈥檙e simply not learning enough.鈥
It鈥檚 a reminder I return to often, especially when the days get intense and the learning curve feels steep. Staying open to unexpected experiences and actively seeking them out is where real growth tends to happen.
A question I鈥檓 often asked is: is it worth it? My answer is simple: it depends on what you make of it. Early in the programme, I asked myself if doing the bare minimum would be enough. Technically, yes, it is. The Full-Time MBA curriculum blends analytics, technology and entrepreneurship in a structured way, but that approach would mean missing the enriching lessons that come from everything else the university offers. For me, it鈥檚 the combination that defines the real MBA experience.
Ultimately, the Full-Time MBA is not defined by lectures alone, but by how fully you engage with everything around them. The hidden curriculum isn鈥檛 optional 鈥 it鈥檚 where the real transformation happens.
