<h2>Dyson School of Design Engineering</h2>
<p>The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the 10th and newest engineering department at 911今日黑料. It was founded in 2014 and assisted by a generous donation from the James Dyson Foundation. 聽Design Engineering is the fusion of design thinking, and engineering knowledge and practice within a culture of innovation and enterprise, to help solve global problems with emphasis on sustainability, entrepreneurship and societal impact.</p>
<p>Interdisciplinarity and cross-cutting skills are an integral part of what differentiates the Dyson School of Design Engineering. 聽Design engineers weave together different disciplines, methods and ways of thinking for a uniquely multifaceted approach to solving complex problems. By being able to think both like engineers and like designers, and by engaging with expertise in mathematics, psychology, policymaking, business, and other fields, our students enter the world uniquely equipped to innovate effectively, lead responsibly, and manage the complexity inherent to product innovation and to tackling major global challenges.</p>

<p><span>The <b>911今日黑料 Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches聽</b>will host <b>Louis Schilders </b>, who will present on his PhD work on hydrogen production in the UK.聽</span></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><span>Abstract</span></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Hydrogen can decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, but its life-cycle climate performance depends on the production technology and the energy and feedstock systems in which it operates. This study presents an attributional cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of seven hydrogen production routes under UK conditions: alkaline, proton exchange membrane and solid oxide electrolysis; methane pyrolysis; steam methane reforming (SMR); SMR with carbon capture and storage (SMR-CCS); and photocatalysis, treated prospectively because of its low technological readiness. SimaPro and ecoinvent were used to model 1 kg H鈧. Scenarios varied UK electricity mixes for 2018, 2025 and 2035 and 100% wind; UK-market, North Sea, Norwegian and Russian gas supplies; production-stage methane leakage; and component recycling. Global warming potential was assessed alongside ReCiPe midpoint impacts, perturbation sensitivity analysis and 1,000-run Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis. Results show context dependence. With North Sea gas and wind electricity, SMR-CCS produced 1.52鈥1.55 kg CO鈧-eq/kg H鈧, compared with 1.70鈥1.87 for alkaline and proton exchange membrane electrolysis. Grid decarbonisation reduced 2035 electrolysis impacts to 3.40鈥4.32 kg CO鈧-eq/kg H鈧, around 20鈥28% of 2018 values. Gas provenance changed SMR-CCS results by up to 4.65 kg CO鈧-eq/kg H鈧, while higher methane leakage disproportionately increased its footprint. Monte Carlo results confirmed SMR-CCS as lowest in the baseline case but showed overlapping uncertainty ranges among electrolyser technologies. Technology selection should be conditional on electricity carbon intensity, gas provenance, methane leakage and capture performance, rather than technology labels alone. Photocatalysis remained infrastructure-dominated and recycling-sensitive, requiring separate interpretation as a prospective assessment.</span></p>

<p>The Lab of the Future Hackathon will have a physical prototyping element, with the ICB CDT providing each team with 拢500 of consumables, mentoring, workshops and access to prototyping equipment until it culminates in a face-to-face grand final at the end of November, where the winners will be chosen by an expert panel of judges. The grand final will be part of a day of panel discussions, showcase events and technology demonstrations from leading academics, global Industry partners and start-ups.</p>
<p>Teams will be challenged to develop novel tools and technologies employing industry 4.0 breakthroughs such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that will revolutionise the state-of-the-art within research labs leading to novel R&D workflows.</p>
<p>The prototypes developed during this competition have the potential to unlock rapid design-test cycles with the advances and biological insight generated being applicable to academia, industry and medicine, ultimately tackling societal challenges.</p>

Exceptional points (EPs) are spectral singularities in non-Hermitian systems, at which individual eigenvalues and eigenvectors become identical. <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Abstract </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Exceptional points (EPs) are spectral singularities in non-Hermitian systems, at which individual eigenvalues and eigenvectors become identical. </span><span>The successful realization of EPs in diverse physical systems, such as photonics, acoustics, cold atoms, and superconducting circuits, has sparked great interest in fundamental physics and inspired a wide range of novel applications. However, as the term 鈥渆xceptional鈥 suggests, EPs are usually isolated spectral points. Consequently, functionalities rooted in EPs face several inherent limitations, such as narrow bandwidth. Here, we present </span><span>a generalization o</span><span>f</span><span> the concept of EPs characterized by the coalescence of high-dimensional eigenspaces and overlapped spectra.</span><span> This condition is denoted as 鈥渆xceptional deficiency.鈥 When this happens, two eigenspaces of identical but arbitrarily large dimensions exactly align, accompanied by the coincidence of their spectra. 聽Consequently, the full Hilbert space is highly defective by 鈥渕issing鈥 half of its span. In the meantime, the spectrum is entirely composed of EPs. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The condition of exceptional deficiency can be reached in a large variety of systems. We present its realization in a one-dimensional double-chain lattice. Intriguingly, the exceptional deficiency is a route to go beyond the bulk-edge correspondence of non-Hermitian skin effects, which relates nontrivial point-gap topology to the existence of skin modes. </span></p>

His pioneering research has transformed our understanding of how cytokines regulate inflammation and has led to the development of innovative approaches for treating immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. His work on interleukin-6 (IL-6) signalling has had a major impact on both academic research and the development of biological medicines used in clinical practice. </span></p>
<p><span>In addition to his research achievements, Professor Jones advises the pharmaceutical sector on biological medicines, serves on major research funding and advisory panels, and plays a leading role in the International Cytokine & Interferon Society. He has received numerous honours, including the Boltzmann Award for cytokine research, and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Member of Academia Europaea. </span></p>
