The Design for Responsible Robotics Summer School invites students to explore the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and human values through an immersive, hands-on learning experience. Over two intensive weeks, participants will gain both technical and creative skills—combining robotics, design thinking, and policy awareness—to imagine and prototype solutions that contribute positively to society. Dyson School of Design Engineering

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the 10th and newest engineering department at 911��պ��. It was founded in 2014 and assisted by a generous donation from the James Dyson Foundation. Design Engineering is the fusion of design thinking, and engineering knowledge and practice within a culture of innovation and enterprise, to help solve global problems with emphasis on sustainability, entrepreneurship and societal impact.

Interdisciplinarity and cross-cutting skills are an integral part of what differentiates the Dyson School of Design Engineering. Design engineers weave together different disciplines, methods and ways of thinking for a uniquely multifaceted approach to solving complex problems. By being able to think both like engineers and like designers, and by engaging with expertise in mathematics, psychology, policymaking, business, and other fields, our students enter the world uniquely equipped to innovate effectively, lead responsibly, and manage the complexity inherent to product innovation and to tackling major global challenges.

The students on the Summer School will benefit from the interdisciplinary excellence of research and teaching, the interaction with real-world leaders in design, innovation, and enterprise, as well as practical prototyping capacities offered by the Dyson School of Design Engineering.

Big Butterfly Count at South Kensington

Join us on 28 July and take part in the Big Butterfly Count, a UK-wide survey where you can help contribute to conservation science and research by counting butterflies!

No experience is needed to join, you can download the Big Butterfly Count app ahead of the event which provides an ID guide, and we will have a go at spotting the different species together.

We will meet by Queen’s Tower, South Kensington campus at 13:00 and then head over to The Flower Walk in Kensington Gardens for the count. We will be there till 14:00 and each count takes 15mins so feel free to pop along any time during this window and stay for 1 or 2 counts or more!

There will be a session at our Hammersmith campus, date tbc soon, and you can also take part in the Big Butterfly Count at home anytime between 17 July and 9 August.

A newly developed curriculum brings together training in the latest advances in computational biology and is delivered flexibly to suit all learners.

Alongside online lectures and training material, this course also uses novel live synchronous sessions delivered via virtual reality (VR) technologies, which enables interactions in virtual spaces between lecturers and students and provides unique learning opportunities.

You will take modules in computational biology, and specialist streams in either computational genomics or computational brain sciences, together with a six month computational research project that provides training in computational biomedicine.

Journal Club: Natural Gas, Electrolysis, Photocatalysis and Methane Pyrolysis based Hydrogen Production in the UK a comparative life cycle analysis of carbon emissions for future electricity and natural gas supply scenarios

The 911��պ�� Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches will host Louis Schilders , who will present on his PhD work on hydrogen production in the UK.

Abstract

Hydrogen can decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, but its life-cycle climate performance depends on the production technology and the energy and feedstock systems in which it operates. This study presents an attributional cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of seven hydrogen production routes under UK conditions: alkaline, proton exchange membrane and solid oxide electrolysis; methane pyrolysis; steam methane reforming (SMR); SMR with carbon capture and storage (SMR-CCS); and photocatalysis, treated prospectively because of its low technological readiness. SimaPro and ecoinvent were used to model 1 kg H₂. Scenarios varied UK electricity mixes for 2018, 2025 and 2035 and 100% wind; UK-market, North Sea, Norwegian and Russian gas supplies; production-stage methane leakage; and component recycling. Global warming potential was assessed alongside ReCiPe midpoint impacts, perturbation sensitivity analysis and 1,000-run Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis. Results show context dependence. With North Sea gas and wind electricity, SMR-CCS produced 1.52–1.55 kg CO₂-eq/kg H₂, compared with 1.70–1.87 for alkaline and proton exchange membrane electrolysis. Grid decarbonisation reduced 2035 electrolysis impacts to 3.40–4.32 kg CO₂-eq/kg H₂, around 20–28% of 2018 values. Gas provenance changed SMR-CCS results by up to 4.65 kg CO₂-eq/kg H₂, while higher methane leakage disproportionately increased its footprint. Monte Carlo results confirmed SMR-CCS as lowest in the baseline case but showed overlapping uncertainty ranges among electrolyser technologies. Technology selection should be conditional on electricity carbon intensity, gas provenance, methane leakage and capture performance, rather than technology labels alone. Photocatalysis remained infrastructure-dominated and recycling-sensitive, requiring separate interpretation as a prospective assessment.

Louis Schilders is a 2^nd year PhD student in Environmental Policy his interest is in hydrogen production technologies and life cycle analysis methods. His previous studies were at Durham University and LSE, and he has work experience at Longevity Partners (ESG) and the European Commission DG INTPA.

New Gen Festival is a youth-led festival celebrating music, dance, creativity and culture in Ealing through live performances, workshops, emerging talent and community collaboration. They put young people at the centre of everything we do. They have opportunities to work in paid festival roles and volunteer to learn new skills as well as having opportunities to perform.

Held annually in Walpole Park, part of Ealing Summer Festivals, New Gen creates opportunities for emerging artists and young creatives to perform, collaborate and connect with audiences alongside more established performers. They also have a year-long programme of events engaging with young people creatively including workshops, training and open mic nights.

The festival combines live entertainment with hands-on creative activities, career pathways, and inclusive community engagement, reflecting the diversity and creativity of young people across Ealing and West London.

Sound Bath

Join us for this deeply immersive, meditative experience where participants are “bathed” in sound waves produced by therapeutic instruments. This sound bath will use large crystal singing bowls, which create a very calming, gentle and restorative soundscape, alongside Himalayan bowls, which offer a deeper grounding resonance.

The purpose of a sound bath is to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and bring about a state of mental and emotional balance by calming the nervous system.

Please wear clothing you feel comfortable lying down in. Please bring extra layers and / or a blanket as you will likely feel cool as your body enters deep relaxation.

Join us for the next SciComm Series on Developing Engagement Activities, which will double as support for a Great Exhibition Road Festival application. This will take place on Thursday 30th July from 09:30-12:00 in G23/24 at the MSRH with Hana Ayoob, a public engagement specialist. Every year the ICB CDT enters the Great Exhibition Road Festival with an application process that starts very early on! It’s a great opportunity to get your ideas together at this stage and have a lot of support doing so.

In this session, public engagement specialist Hana Ayoob will take you through the process of brainstorming ideas for your own research-related engagement activities, choosing one idea to work on and creating a prototype of your activity. Along the way, she will share case studies of different outreach activities and talk about some of the practical considerations we need to keep in mind when developing new activities.

Hana Ayoob is a science communicator and illustrator with over a decade of experience in STEM Engagement including producing for some of the largest science festivals in the country, coordinating patient involvement on a clinical trial, developing creative engagement activities and creating illustrations for engagement projects.

This session provides structure and space for participants to generate ideas for engagement activities by harnessing their interests and experiences outside of their work, before developing one activity further.

ICB CDT Lab of the Future Hackathon

The ICB CDT has launched an ideas-generating Hackathon for teams of 911��պ�� graduates undertaking Masters, PhD or PDRA positions to develop lab of the future tools and technologies – which will address the changing nature of the modern lab.

The Lab of the Future Hackathon will have a physical prototyping element, with the ICB CDT providing each team with £500 of consumables, mentoring, workshops and access to prototyping equipment until it culminates in a face-to-face grand final at the end of November, where the winners will be chosen by an expert panel of judges. The grand final will be part of a day of panel discussions, showcase events and technology demonstrations from leading academics, global Industry partners and start-ups.

Teams will be challenged to develop novel tools and technologies employing industry 4.0 breakthroughs such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that will revolutionise the state-of-the-art within research labs leading to novel R&D workflows.

The prototypes developed during this competition have the potential to unlock rapid design-test cycles with the advances and biological insight generated being applicable to academia, industry and medicine, ultimately tackling societal challenges.

From Exceptional Points to Exceptional Bands

Abstract

Exceptional points (EPs) are spectral singularities in non-Hermitian systems, at which individual eigenvalues and eigenvectors become identical. The successful realization of EPs in diverse physical systems, such as photonics, acoustics, cold atoms, and superconducting circuits, has sparked great interest in fundamental physics and inspired a wide range of novel applications. However, as the term “exceptional” suggests, EPs are usually isolated spectral points. Consequently, functionalities rooted in EPs face several inherent limitations, such as narrow bandwidth. Here, we present a generalization of the concept of EPs characterized by the coalescence of high-dimensional eigenspaces and overlapped spectra. This condition is denoted as “exceptional deficiency.” When this happens, two eigenspaces of identical but arbitrarily large dimensions exactly align, accompanied by the coincidence of their spectra. Consequently, the full Hilbert space is highly defective by “missing” half of its span. In the meantime, the spectrum is entirely composed of EPs.

The condition of exceptional deficiency can be reached in a large variety of systems. We present its realization in a one-dimensional double-chain lattice. Intriguingly, the exceptional deficiency is a route to go beyond the bulk-edge correspondence of non-Hermitian skin effects, which relates nontrivial point-gap topology to the existence of skin modes.

User preferences
Adding new events
Editing existing events
Segmenting and Splitting events
Deleting events
Filtering resource data using the filtering functionality
Finding events via the Event ID
Understanding the Clash Checker functionality
Duplicating and/or moving events
Usage charts – using them to see your departments rooms and their availability in specified weeks
Multiple Selection Lists
Using the room adviser functionality to find free space rooms in other departments
Emailing room requests via Celcat or completing departmental room request forms

MRes in Chemical Biology Symposium 2025-26

On the 1st September 2026 we will be holding our annual ICB MRes Symposium, a wonderful celebration of all that our MRes students have achieved over the past academic year.

This event will include the whole ICB CDT community of students and supervisors, to support their fellow CDT students, and to celebrate the amazing work that has been done over the past year.

This year, ICB CDT students in the 2nd year of the CDT programme will act as metors to the MRes students, and ICB CDT students in the 3rd year of the CDT programme will chair the presentations.

The ICB end of summer party will follow on directly after this event in The Works!

A Systems Approach to Infrastructure

“A Systems Approach to Infrastructure”, is a course for mid to senior level professionals engaged in infrastructure policy, planning, financing and implementation. It is also a place for all those interested in creating a more sustainable and resilient world to engage in discussions with infrastructure policy makers, sponsors and implementers.

As a world leading university, 911��պ�� promises a learning curve of unsurpassed quality with top experts from around the world who will bring together all aspects of a systems approach to infrastructure implementation from planning, financing, to practical lessons learned on mega infrastructure programmes like Heathrow T5, Thames Tideway, Cross Rail, East-West Rail, Denver Union Station and Eagle Line, and other examples from around the world.

The participants will hear policy makers discuss the complexities and interdependencies of policies aimed at sustainable, innovative and resilient infrastructure; financial experts will discuss the sources, methods and constraints of financing such infrastructure; private consultants and public sector organizations will present case studies, lessons learned, practical issues, key success factors, and the importance of leadership, governance and team building in the successful implementation of infrastructure; academics and researchers will outline the role of emerging technologies and the direction of future research in systems engineering.

Understanding Jak-STAT cytokine signalling in inflammation

We are pleased to welcome Professor Simon Jones, Co-Director of the Systems Immunity Research Institute and the Hodge Centre for Translational Neuroscience at Cardiff University, as our guest speaker.

Professor Jones is an internationally recognised authority in cytokine biology. His pioneering research has transformed our understanding of how cytokines regulate inflammation and has led to the development of innovative approaches for treating immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. His work on interleukin-6 (IL-6) signalling has had a major impact on both academic research and the development of biological medicines used in clinical practice.

In addition to his research achievements, Professor Jones advises the pharmaceutical sector on biological medicines, serves on major research funding and advisory panels, and plays a leading role in the International Cytokine & Interferon Society. He has received numerous honours, including the Boltzmann Award for cytokine research, and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Member of Academia Europaea.

We look forward to welcoming Professor Jones and hope you will join us for this seminar.
